Summary

The Safe Place is a physical location in the classroom that serves as a self-regulation learning center. It is equipped with tools for calming and self-regulation and supports the Skill of Composure. This training was developed to help early childhood educators to gain, regain and maintain composure. Once we learn the skill of composure, then and only then, can we teach this vital skill to children. We will explore how adults who have learned the skill of composure are able to focus on what they want the child to accomplish, utilize connection instead of control as the motivation to behave, celebrate the child’s successes and choices, see situations from the child’s perspective as well as their own, teach the child how to communicate desires and frustrations in a socially acceptable manner, and hold the child accountable to those teachings.
